niggli has been an independent Swiss publisher of technical books on the subjects of typography, design and architecture for more than 65 years now. The books that are published by the niggli Verlag are meant for teachers, students or professionals in creative occupations. The publications that have been designed with a love for detail and that are rich in content are meant to support and inspire the reader in his/her everyday professional life and they set new trends.
niggli is synonymous with a high degree of quality and, even today, orients itself on the principles that the founder of the publishing house, Arthur Niggli (1923–2000), laid out in Teufen in Appenzell. Right from the beginning, the classical disciplines of Bauhaus were decisive for the selection of the books and, as a consequence of this, Arthur Niggli published the legendary topographical textbooks of Emil Ruder, Josef Müller-Brockmann and Armin Hofmann among others. These textbooks are still being published today and have been translated into many languages already. Several writings that are known worldwide by Karl Gerstner, the person responsible for the niggli logo, as well as the “lettera” series, “Designing programs” or “Compendium for alphabets” are still considered classics of this publishing house. The first monography on Paul Klee was also published by niggli Verlag for the first time in 1954. The ever increasing range on the subject of architecture included authors such as Walter Gropius, Pier Luigi Nervi, Le Corbusier and Venturi Rauch.
From 2014, the new head of the publishing house is the publisher, Markus Sebastian Braun. He has made it his objective to orient the publishing house predominantly internationally so that it can grow all across the world thanks to its international sales organisation. This is based on the fact that the publications are generally in two or three languages. Nowadays, the publishing house exports about 80% of its books all over the world. First and foremost, the thematic focus is still typography and design. This is supported by publications of renowned research institutes, architects and designers, such as the ETH Zürich or the ECAL in Lausanne, Valerio Olgiati, Staufer Hasler, Gigon Guyer, Luigi Snozzi, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Jost Hochuli or Max Bill amongst others. The range is also supplemented by theoretical titles on the subjects of architecture and town planning.
Through the continuous search for good subjects, quality has been created that exists even today due to the ongoing cooperation with exceptional book designers. The careful selection of the subjects and the publications that result from this, have been, every now and then, awarded prizes for being “The nicest Swiss books” and this, all through the course of the history of the publishing house. Aside from that, they have also been given several international awards, Silver and Gold, for the “Nicest books in the world”. In the last few years, niggli Verlag has had reason to be pleased along with its authors, for various nominations, such as in the Red Dot Design Award, the Deutschen Designpreis (German design prize), the iF design award, the one from the Type Directors Club New York, the German Design Award, the Design Preis Schweiz (Design Prize of Switzerland) and the Deutschen Architekturbuchpreis (German Architecture Book Prize) for 2009 and 2011.
