Chair No 1 is made of steel rod construction creating a graphical form that is deceptively simple and weightless upholstered in leather from Tärnsjö tannery. For Catrine Göhlin, the founder and driving force behind the steel furniture company Steel by Göhlin, and a second-generation member of a major steel manufacture family in Gnosjö, Sweden, the products remain a local and family affair. The chair, in all its refined robust quality, is versatile and well-suited for both contract and domestic environments. As the designer Pontus Lomar of Lomar Arkitekter has over 25 years of experience in architecture and design. “Designing for wire construction is like a game, preferably completing the form by a continuous line without lifting the pencil. For production, it is also about seeking minimal dimension to achieve maximal stability and comfort.” says Pontus: “As a child, I was fascinated with the folding lines of the butterfly chair. Years later, Frank Stella’s steel sculptures which resemble the whirling smoke of his cigars, provided another source of inspiration.”
