Mac Stopa’s Transparency modular carpet design is produced by Milliken. The design’s 3D geometry is formed by three transparent layers mixed to create unusual dimensional depth. The design is enabled by Milliken’s patented Millitron® digital patterning technology, which allowed Mac’s vision to be precisely translated onto the carpet tiles. Mac designed the pattern for the carpet so the pattern will always work and connect from one tile to the next hiding connections between the tiles, creating the illusion of broadloom carpet. The design process included creating 3D printed modular mesh tiles, which later in the design process were converted into three-dimensional tessellating patterns on the carpet tile. The design of Transparency illustrates how combining thinking about architecture, modularity and new technologies, such as 3D printing, can be creatively applied in designing and developing innovative modular carpet tiles.
