For the 2014/15 season, the principal sponsors of Borussia Dortmund, Evonik, decided to invite a group of writers – the German Football Association National Writer’s Side – to accompany the Bundesliga team. The outcome was a paean to the club known as BVB, illustrated in its trademark black-yellow colour scheme and featuring pieces by well-known authors such as Thomas Brussig and Albert Ostermaier. The book was structured by its title – “A Year in Black and Yellow” – to move with the club through the season from summer training camps and the first half of the season, into the winter break and the second half, up to the final whistle and a retrospective debriefing. In the course of the year, the National Writer’s Eleven takes a literary look at the various dimensions of the beautiful game, leading the reader on a journey through this exciting season, cheering, celebrating, and suffering with the club – and, somehow, playing on the pitch with them. Reading the Game was released both as a general edition and in a special corporate version in the Evonik keynote colour, deep purple, and featuring a foreword by Dr. Klaus Engel, the Chair of the Evonik Industries AG Board of Management.
