The book AHA unites slovak folk embroidery patterns with contemporary graphic design. Eight chapters represent all eight regions of Slovakia. Each chapter introduces embroidery tradition of the respective area together with lyrics of a folk song typical for the specific locality. The objective of this book is to demonstrate Slovaks the beauty of their own visual history and to present slovak traditions to the foreign audience in modern form. The book is in English and Slovak, printed in font by slovak designer. Its technical complexity makes it a one-of-a-kind on the slovak book market. The book contains five kinds of paper, laser cuttings, mix of digital and offset printing and has an open spine, handsewn binding.
The book was author’s master’s degree thesis and received several design awards. Based on this achievements he decided to publish it, but all of the publishing houses rejected him for the technical complexity of the book. Therefore he published it at his own expenses and with a help of crowdfunding, thanks to which he collected 225% of the required amount. The book become the official gift of the Slovak republic at EXPO 2015 in Milan, Italy.
