The exhibition catalogue “ich bin ich” (I am who I am) portrays 120 mentally and physically disabled pupils of the Comenius School in Essen, Germany. The many photographs on the 274 pages of the catalogue were shot by the pupils themselves. For this purpose, photographer A. Teichmann constructed a special mobile photo studio that allowed the children to see themselves in a mirror to take the self-portraits. The pupils were invited to take several portraits and then to choose their favourite one – the picture best reflecting their identity – for the exhibition. The catalogue documents the procedure of selecting the final photo and features statements by the children about themselves as quotes in cloud-shaped speech balloons.
