The geometrically clear, flowing architectural design of the new public-utilities administration building in Essen, Germany, has been harmoniously expanded by this integral graphic design interface concept. It provides a comprehensive, typography-centred coding, signage and wayfinding system for all building areas and outdoor facilities (including even the escape and rescue plans). The architectural principle of the edifice, which is monolithic yet pervious to light, is complemented in the interior by elaborate graphics applied to all glass wall surfaces. Semi-transparent stripe structures, based on a random mathematical algorithm, help provide both partial visibility and privacy, thus creating an impressively dense atmospheric effect.
