Child safety seat for car and bike

Child safety seat for car and bike

In Germany, it is statutory to have a special seat for child transport, like all of the EU countries. A child may not travel without an extra seat in the parents’ vehicle until it has reached at least certain height and weight class. As the dimensions of the safety system in vehicles are designed for adults, it is pretty easy to comprehend why. Having said that, children seats and infant carriers provide the young passengers a lot of comfort while on a car ride, because they usually feel safe in their carrier due to calming rocking movements and the unvarying steady buzz. Now you can always travel with your child, whether you are off to visiting grandparents or friends, whether it’s time for a trip to the nearest town or an important appointment. You can always choose between a pushchair and baby carrier, if you love walking. However, if you want to get around on wheels, an age-appropriate child seat should be used for safe child transport.

Safe on the move with baby or toddler

With these modern child seats, your kid is protected while on a car ride, right from infancy to childhood. The use of high-quality and lightweight plastics not only allows for a robust construction, but also ensures carrying comfort for parents by its light weight. In this high quality child seat, the seat is designed ergonomically – it helps stabilise the spine and the head of the child. Depending on the size and weight of the child, a perfect fit is guaranteed at all times.

What are the categories of child seats?

Depending on weight and size of the child, there are different categories of child safety seats that are suitable for the child and promise maximum safety. The categories are divided into 0, 0+, I, II, III and have weight classes mandated by the EU standard. Refer to the approved standards prior to purchase on the Child seat systems within the EU. Made from functional materials and equipped with innovative systems for the highest safety standards, there are individual solutions for every need in attractive designs. You can either get different models in succession, i.e. you must buy a new, age-appropriate child seat as soon as the little one grows out of the currently compatible seat or right at the beginning, you can choose a seat – a so-called Combination variant, which kind of grows with the kid and can be used for toddlers until the they reach school age.

EU seal of approval and positioning of child seat for car

A child seat is legally allowed, only if it carries the so-called ECE seal of approval. This abbreviation stands for Economic Commission for Europe, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, which determines the criteria for the seal of approval. Only child car seats that carry the standard ECE R 44/03 or ECE R 44/04 are permitted since April 2008. The number 04 stands for the new generation of seats. Alternatively, since 2014, child seats are authorised as per a new standard (ECE-R129, i-Size), for which certain body sizes are stipulated. According to the new alternative standard “ECE-R129, i-Size”, which has been in force since mid-2013, children up to the age of 15 months should have a rear-facing baby seat. What purpose does that serve?

If you have an accident with the vehicle, the impact of the collision creates energy that will massively expedite acceleration properties for the passengers. If the child would then sit facing the direction of travel, the head would be affected primarily, because the neck muscles in the little ones are not well-developed and that sudden resistance could not be absorbed just by the straps. Therefore, newborns and children up to the age of 15 months are always positioned in the opposite direction of travel, preferably in a semi-reclined position. If any impact forces take effect, the energy is absorbed by the child seat and is directed away from the child.

What does i-Size exactly mean?

The so-called i-Size technology is part of the new EU safety regulation R129, in force since July 2013 in addition to the ECE Directive (ECE R44). If this expires, using the child seat in the opposite direction of travel – a so-called rearward-facing car seat is obligatory up to the age of 15 months.

Fastening methods for the car

Along with tagging a seal of approval, the method of fastening is equally important for sufficient safety when driving the car with a child. Generally, a distinction is drawn between three-point harness and ISOFIX when fastening and the latter technology plays an increasingly important role.

Three-point harness: An attachment with the three-point harness can be fastened in any vehicle, because the cars have such a safety harness by the standard configuration. The seat is strapped directly to the car seat.

Isofix: Isofix is an innovative attachment for child car seats. The outstanding benefit of the Isofix is the rigid connection between body of the car and child seat, which makes it impossible for the child seat to slip away.
