Clean environment through clever design
The aim is to use new ideas and innovations not only for user comfort but also to keep the environment clean and thus to preserve human habitats.
One impressive example is the project The Ocean Cleanup: The objective of this innovative concept is to allow for a streamlined barrier to filter floating plastic waste out of the oceans – without the laborious task of locating or controlling the device, simply by using the natural ocean currents. The project is still in the test phase, but the idea is groundbreaking compared to costly and labour-intensive “plastic-catching campaigns”, although there is still some debate as regards whether a project like this one sends out the wrong message. After all, the idea is not for people to think that someone will ultimately come along behind them and clean up after them, allowing them to continue to produce rubbish without thinking.
However, you don’t need a multi-billion dollar project to contribute to a clean environment: Everyone can do their bit to ease the burden on nature. Instead of producing harmful daily aluminium waste in the form of coffee capsules for their daily coffee, consumers can avail of recyclable options. Not only is the reusable coffee capsule DELTA from MyCoffeestar (you can find the products in the category Household, Kitchenaccessories & tableware) environmentally friendly, it also allows for real cost savings!
Nevertheless, it will never be possible to prevent any waste at all from being produced. This waste has to be separated and disposed of properly. The sustainable waste bin DropBucket is made from 100% recycled cardboard, the product can simply be folded into a waste bin which can then be disposed of together with the waste. In addition, DropBucket is light, easy to transport and store, ready for use quickly and at the same time economical and eco-friendly. The rigorous concept won over the independent jury of experts at the Red Dot Design Awards 2015, and the product won a Red Dot: Best of the Best.
Taking action instead of waiting around
Humans need clean water to drink, clean air to breathe and clean fields on which to cultivate healthy food. There is an increasing awareness of the need to stop the ruthless exploitation of nature and ideally to reverse the devastation somewhat. What are lacking in some areas are the ideas for integrating environmentally friendly behaviour more simply into everyday life. This is where product design takes on a leading role in order to make products more accessible. Good, contemporary design with sustainability on its radar is attractive, functional and eco-friendly at the same time. This makes it possible for everyone to act in an environmentally friendly way without a huge effort. So there’s no reason to wait any longer! Because ecological compatibility is also important for the awarding at the Red Dot Design Award, you will also find many products that stand out thanks to their environmentally friendly nature, whether in terms of materials, production, energy consumption or function. Simply take a look at the category and see for yourself!
