The most important German automobile motor show, the “IAA Cars”, will take place from 14th to 24th September 2017 in Frankfurt am Main. Its motto, this time, is “Experience the Future”. With that, this motor show addresses the core subjects relating to the transformation of the car, which include networked and autonomously driven cars, electro-mobility and new mobility concepts for the city, in particular. With these in focus, the IAA ties thematically into the motto “Mobility connects”, which was at the forefront in 2015.
Intelligent cars and electric motors gain traction
The ever increasing role of new technologies such as driverless cars and hybrid and electric drives will be displayed at the IAA by the Mercedes subsidiary, AMG, and by Audi. The fourth generation of the top-of-the-line saloon, the Audi A8, can drive fully automatically up to 60 km/h and can to park itself by just pressing a button. Additionally, the car will be available with a plug-in hybrid drive that has a range of 50 kilometres, when driven only electrically. In contrast to that, AMG is showcasing its futuristic looking Hypercar, of which only about 300 units will be built. This exclusive concept, which will come to market only in 2019, has a Formula 1 tried and tested V6 petrol engine along with three electric drives which together put out an awesome 1000 HP max. The Chinese brand, Borgward, too, is taking the opportunity to present its first series model, the BX7, at the IAA. The SUV will be available only with an electric motor drive and through that, China will showcase its role in electro-mobility decisively.
The SUV boom is fuelled with new models
Off-road saloons are especially in demand. It is for this reason that, for many manufacturers, the IAA is the ideal platform to present their new SUVs. This year, the focus is on smaller and more compact cars such as the BMW X3 which has a more cutting-edge and lighter-appearing body in the latest model. Other important manufacturers including Mercedes, Opel, Citroën, Dacia, Hyundai and Kia, which have also expanded their range of SUVs, are also awaited at the IAA with their latest models.
Facebook as a guest at the New Mobility World
A clear signal is also being set for the focus of the International Motor Show for networked and autonomously driven cars. This is through the participation of Facebook at the IAA. With more than two billion users, Facebook is one of the most important international online social media and social networking services in the world. It is already utilising technologies such as artificial intelligence in the fields of image and video recognition. This social networking service will be represented by its Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg, at the innovations platform at the IAA – New Mobility World. The innovations platform will run from the 14th to 17th September and provide visitors the opportunity to compare notes on important interfaces between Facebook and mobility companies. These include developments in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning and virtual and augmented reality. At the Agora, the open space at the exhibition grounds, the latest achievements in the field of automated driving and electro-mobility can also be practically experienced.
Important manufacturers missing in 2017
In spite of the high relevance of the IAA as the most important trade fair for the automobile sector, this year’s edition has to do without some well-known names. According to confirmatory media reports, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Volvo will not be present this year. Fiat and Peugeot will only be present with their Ferrari, Maserati, Opel and Citroën brands. The electric car pioneer, Tesla, will also not be participating.
An automobile trade fair with tradition
The International Motor Show (IAA) is one of the largest and the most important automotive trade shows in the world and alternates between the car show in Frankfurt and the commercial vehicles show in Hannover, every year. In 2015, the organiser of IAA Car, the German Association of the Automotive Industry, counted a total of 1103 exhibitors from 39 countries and 931,700 visitors. The IAA, along with the Paris Motor Show, the Geneva International Motor Show and the Detroit Auto Show are the most important automobile shows with the richest traditions in the world. The beginnings of the IAA reach back to the year 1897 when eight so-called “motorwagen” (motorcars) were displayed for the first time in Berlin as part of the founding events of the Mitteleuropäischen Motorwagenvereins (Central European Motorcar Association).
