13sepAll DayTadao AndoBirthday

Event Details

Birthplace: Osaka, Japan

When Tadao Ando opened his architectural bureau in the 1960s, he wanted to create decorative fronts, such as those that the European architecture of that time was famous for. Only slowly did he realise that simplicity is the key – making his buildings world-renowned. The central element, back then and today, was béton brut, the non-plastered, non-veneered concrete. Ando was the first to use it for both the exterior and the interior, making his work style-defining for future generations. Photo: Christopher Schirner, license: CC BY-SA 2.0
