Datuk’ Professor Jimmy Choo is descended from a family of Malaysian shoemakers and learned the craft from his father. He studied at Cordwainers College, which is today part of the London College of Fashion.
After graduating in 1983, he founded his own couture label and opened a shoe shop in London’s East End whose regular customers included the late Diana, Princess of Wales. In 1996, Choo launched his ready-to-wear line with Tom Yeardye. Choo sold his share in the business in November 2001 to Equinox Luxury Holdings Ltd, charging them with the ongoing use of the label on the luxury goods market, while he continued to run his couture line.
Choo now spends his time promoting design education. He is an ambassador for footwear education at the London College of Fashion, a spokesperson for the British Council in their promotion of British Education to foreign students and also spends time working with the non-profit programme, Teach For Malaysia. In 2003, Jimmy Choo was honoured for his contribution to fashion by Queen Elizabeth II who appointed him “Officer of the Order of the British Empire”.
