The torch — a combination of traditional artistry and modern craft
The 2017 Taipei Universiade torch is the first work in Taiwan to combine local designers, craftsmen and traditional industry. It was inspired by the idea of “gentlemanly fair play” in the Confucian Analects. In competition, a competitor must be verbally and physically well-behaved, emulating the style of a Confucian gentleman. Such behavior fits nicely with bamboo’s portrayal in Oriental culture as a symbol of purity and modesty. The materials used in the torch thus represent sportsmanship. Traditional hexagonal bamboo weaving craft was used to make the base, displaying the beauty of traditional Taiwanese crafts. The torch also features a woven bamboo style sculpted using a modern 5-axis laser to display the advanced technological application in Taiwan. This combination of crafts reflects the attitude of “upholding tradition, boldly innovating” that underpins Taipei’s aspiration of hosting this international sporting event.
