Publishing & print media: Effective marketing classics

The “Publishing & Print Media” category contains outstanding examples of editorial design including beautiful magazines, newspapers, catalogues and brochures. For a long time, print media has been predicted to be on its way to imminent extinction. Forest dieback, the internet, E-book readers, tablets and the enormous competition of gaming in childhood – in other words, the germination ground for later bookworms – were all expected, in the long run, to threaten the continued existence of paper media. To date there is little sign of this happening. In Germany, E-books account for just under five per cent of turnover for consumer sales. In the USA, it is admittedly a quarter. Some daily papers and magazines have ceased publication. On the other hand, others have been newly launched and are for sale at the newsstands. So far, the end of print media is not in sight. The same applies to the Red Dot Award: Communication Design where the “Publishing & Print Media” category continues to be very popular. Every year, the jurors discover quite a number of publications that are of impressive design quality.

What makes for good editorial design?

Jury members are persuaded of the quality of editorial design work if every page has been created with attention to detail and ends up producing a complete work of art. This begins with the cover design which is critical for the first impression a publication makes. It should not only whet the appetite for the contents, but should, in most cases, be designed in such a way that the book or magazine stands out from the masses at the point of sale – just think of the myriad of books on display at railway newsstands or bookshops where hundreds of printed works compete for our attention. If we pick one of them up it is generally because the title and cover appeal to us. One of the prerequisites of good editorial design is that the designer understands what the publication is about and knows the contents as well as possible. For in an ideal scenario, design and content enter into a perfect symbiosis and are inextricably interwoven at the end of the design process. The image selection and the illustrations used support the content and reinforce it. The typography makes it easier to absorb the content and guides the readers or viewers through the pages with ease. White spaces provide welcome respite and are the grid that sits behind everything, ensuring a certain degree of order. For printed matter such as books, magazines, newspapers and catalogues another aspect also plays an important role: their touch and feel. The choice of paper, the type of binding, embossing or other print enhancements offer a sensory experience, increase the value of the publication and create an emotional link between a person and a book. Print media that has been carefully thought out and lovingly crafted always appeals to the members of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design jury.
